The TL70 Throwout Bearing Retainer, also known as the throwout bearing snout or guide, is a critical component in the clutch system of your 2013+ FRS/BRZ/86 and 2022+ BRZ/GR86. This part ensures proper alignment and smooth operation of the throwout bearing during clutch engagement and disengagement. Over time, the OEM aluminum retainer can wear, leading to poor pedal feel, unwanted noise, and even premature throwout bearing failure.

To enhance durability and performance, we took the OEM retainer and applied a Hard Anodized Teflon (PTFE) coating, improving longevity and reducing friction and wear. Engineered with input from BRZ/GR86 enthusiasts and engineers, this upgraded retainer is designed to provide a significant improvement in clutch system reliability.

Hard anodizing is an electrochemical process that reinforces aluminum with a thick, dense oxide layer, significantly increasing hardness and wear resistance. Infused with PTFE, this coating further reduces friction and prevents premature wear, ensuring the throwout bearing glides smoothly over time—all while maintaining the lightweight benefits of aluminum.

During the development of our Ultimate Throwout Bearing, we found that the throwout bearing carrier endures significant wear, even after a single clutch cycle. Because of this, we recommend replacing the retainer with every clutch cycle.

To extend its lifespan, we applied a hard anodized PTFE coating, creating a smoother, more durable surface that effectively doubles clutch cycle life compared to an uncoated retainer.
